Today over 94 million Americans will watch the most popular television event of the year -the championship game of the National Football League - The Super Bowl. Not surprisingly, it is the no 1 day for home-parties - surpassing even New Year's Eve!

It is estimated that Americans spend over 55mm USD on food and drinks on this one day, chowing down more food than any other day except Thanksgiving.

So what do we eat and drink? - Here are some statistics that will give you an idea............

  • Pounds of Potato and Tortilla chips consumed on Superbowl Sunday - 20 million
  • Pounds of Guacamole eaten with those chips - 8 million
  • Pounds of Popcorn munched on - 3.8 million lbs (a string of all that popcorn would circle the earth 5.5.times).
  • Increase in sales of snack crackers - 68%
  • Increase in sale of soft drinks the week prior to Super Bowl Sunday - $237 million
  • Increase in beer sales during this week - $11.8 million
  • Pizza Deliveries on this day - 2 million, and that's just from Pizza Hut. There are more pizza deliveries on this day, than any other day of the year!

AND after all this food is of course "Super Monday" which has it's own set of stats

  • Increase in sales of antacid medicines (as reported by Seven-Eleven stores) - 20%
  • The number of people who call in sick - 6% or over 1.4 million

No wonder some Americans want to declare the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday! There is even a site dedicated to getting enough votes to send a petition to government officials (www.superbowlmonday.com) We would love to know what you think. Be sure to add your votes below.

Happy Superbowl Sunday!
