While exciting, surfing competitions are usually all about which athlete is successful in catching and riding the highest possible wave. However, at this recently held event in Cape Town, the surfers not only had to worry about riding waves, but doing it creatively by either wearing something outrageous or, using unconventional surfing boards.

Organized by officials of the tiny surfing village of Kommetjie, this innovative competition, which took place earlier this week, was part of an inaugural festival held to foster community spirit and raise funds for local projects.

And, the surfers did not hold back - Shedding their normally somber black wetsuits, they braved the freezing waters dressed as clowns, wizards and even Tigger from Winnie the Pooh! Others focused their creative skills on the equipment with one crazy surfer even pulling down his shed door to use as a surfboard.

Some of the most innovative ones included surfer Chip Snaddon, who took home a brand new wetsuit and title of 'best dressed' with his blue bottle outfit. Mikah Burger won a custom surfboard for 'Most original' with his alien UFO surfing attire. The title of most 'Original Craft' was handed out to a duo who strapped their boards together and then tried to surf. Needless to say, while hilarious, they were not very successful!

However, it was Michael Grendon, who stole everyone's hearts with his surfboard contraption that comprised of a 'Bob the Builder' ladder and surfboard hybrid. Wearing just a Speedo, the surfer would paddle on the board and then hastily climb up the ladder to try catch the wave from the top - Not surprisingly, he went home with the award for 'Most entertaining surfer'.

All in all, it was a great day, one where surfers not only got to do what they love best, but also, have some fun - And the best part is, it was all for a good cause!
