36-year old Hilary Lister is quadriplegic, which means she cannot move her hands or legs or any other part of her body. The only part of the body that Hilary can move is her head. Despite these challenges, Hilary is a very accomplished sailor, with several awards and records to her credit.

It all began five years ago, when a friend took her sailing. For the first time in years she felt free and liberated. She then found out about a method called "sip-puff", devised in America, which allows people who cannot move their bodies to steer sailboats. The method involves using her breath through three straws to steer the boat.

She not only became an accomplished sailor but set herself challenges that even able-bodied people would find difficult. Her first challenge was to cross the English Channel alone. Strapped with a map across the mast she set off on a six-hour journey across the channel, steering and controlling the sail by sucking and blowing into plastic straws. She broke two records that day - the first time a quadriplegic sailor had crossed the Channel and longest solo voyage by a quadriplegic sailor. In 2007 Hilary broke another record by being the first quadriplegic sailor to go around the Isle of Wight.

This summer, she wants to fulfill another dream - sailing around the British Isles! This is a much longer sail expected to take between 3-4 months. She expects to do it in short one-day sails. Each day she and her team will record her exact longitude and latitude so that they can tow her back to the exact location the next day. Each night Hilary will be towed into a port where she will meet the local people and spend the night.

Hilary, who now spends her days teaching and inspiring other disabled people to sail, has not been this happy and fulfilled with her life in a long time and we hope she continues to achieve her dreams and aspirations. To read more about this amazing woman check out www.hilarylister.com
