The small town of Hoschton in Northeast Georgia, is being invaded by scarecrows - about 4,800 of them to be exact. At least that was the final count when the deadline for making the mannequins passed at midnight on September 1st.

The town now awaits with abated breath, to see if they have achieved their goal of winning the Guinness Book of Records title for the 'Most scarecrows in one location'. The current record is held by the Cincinnati Horticultural Society, who built a record of 3,311 scarecrows in 2003.

Scarecrows have always played a crucial role in Hoschton's two-day fall festival held annually on the last weekend of September. This year, Hoschton resident Robbie Bettis, decided to step it up a notch and see if they could collectively break the world record.

However, Robbie wasn't quite prepared for how many scarecrows they would need - She had estimated the number to be in the hundreds not thousands!

But the townspeople stepped up to the challenge and hunkered down. They created scarecrow football teams ready to tackle each other, families with kids, doctors, businessmen and even convicts with striped socks and all.

The scarecrows can be seen everywhere in this little town - on the main drag, on every little street, on every vacant field and wherever else there is room.

Robbie Bettis is now busy tagging each one of them and taking pictures and even videos to send to the folks at Guinness. She knows they will reject some, but believes that with over 1,000 more scarecrows then the last record, they have a pretty good shot at entering the record books. An added advantage to having all these scarecrows - No crows have been spotted in town since April!

The scarecrows will be left on display until the Annual fair at the end of September. After that, Hoschton will revert to a quiet town of 1,700 residents - albeit slightly more famous than before, especially if it gets into the Guinness Book of Records.
