While you may not need an excuse to eat a donut, you may need one to convince your parents - Here's a good one - It is National Donut Day!

Celebrated the first Friday of June each year, the holiday dates all the way back to 1938. It was started as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army during the Great Depression. While they don't celebrate it anymore, the rest of the country sure does.

Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme celebrate by giving a free donut to every customer who walks into their stores. If you don't have one nearby, you can still celebrate by going to the Dunkin Donut website and creating your dream donut. Choose the shape, dough filling, toppings and frosting and save and share your virtual masterpiece with the entire world.

That of course, will make you even more hungry for one - Simply head to the local donut store and even if they are not giving out free donuts, they may be donating some of their proceeds to charity and may even have a special creation. So go ahead and celebrate this yummy holiday with a hot one.
