Love free things? Then you are in luck. That's because Saturday, May 3rd, happens to be Free Comic Book Day. This means that you can walk into any participating store and get yourself one (or multiple) copies of your favorite comic book. The best part is that this special day is celebrated by comic book retailers all over the world.

Now in its twelfth year, the annual event that is held on the first Saturday of May, is a collaboration between comic book publishers, retailers and distributors. It was established to introduce the joy of comic books to young readers and to get them to visit their neighborhood comic book store. Since 2002, vendors have given away over 12 million special edition comic books, and the numbers are only growing.

Though not every comic book is free, there is usually at least one or two in the free catalog to meet every taste. The varied choice also allows young readers to try comic books that they would normally not gravitate toward.

This year's list includes 60 titles from over 16 publishers, including Marvel and DC Entertainment. Among the highlights are special editions of the Guardians of the Galaxy and Rocket Raccoon. Also available, is an Archie Digest, The Simpsons, Peanuts, Hello Kitty and Friends and . . . the list goes on. Even if none of the freebies appeal to you, a visit to the store may be worth the effort, given that every comic book is sold at a discount on this special day.

Oh and if you need to convince your parents about the merits of comic books you may want to inform them that even experts believe that comic books are really good for learning! To find your closest participating retailer and to see the entire free collection go to freecomicbookday.
