This was one of the first chapter books I’ve ever read! My aid* let me read it “because it was pink” and I really liked it . That was two years ago! Usually, my aid and my teacher try to keep me from reading chapter books, but I read them at home or , sometimes they let me have the pink ones. I was really lucky this was pink!
*The reason I have an aid is because I have autism.
This book is about the title character, a girl named Coraline. She and her parents move to a big house called the Pink Palace. She finds a tiny door, and during the day the door is just bricks, but at night there is a portal. She goes in and finds people who look exactly like everyone she knows, but with buttons for eyes. They are her “Other Mother” and “Other Father”. On her birthday, they give her buttons and a needle for a gift. They tell her to take out her eyes and replace them with buttons so she can stay forever ( and so the Other Mother can eat her soul)! This book is horrific and really cool!
I can really relate to this book. I have autism, and my teacher treats me like how Melody’s teacher treats her. When I tell her that the work is too easy, she just s-l-o-w-l-y reads the directions again. I don’t have many friends because my teacher gave me an aid who follows me everywhere in school and repeats every that people say to me in a super quiet and slow voice, reads everything allowed to me, and makes me get everything first. This book made me both sad and happy when I read it. I recommend this book a lot.
