It may have taken him half a century, but 60-year old Hubert Hilling has finally seen the light - by installing electricity to his 300-year old cottage..........And guess what? He really likes it!

Hubert, who lives near the town of Kilgetty, in Southwest Wales. has spent most of his life in this cottage, which has belonged to his family for decades.

Until now, he saw no reason to install electricity. Instead, Hubert used gaslights and candles that he would light up individually each night. He would cook on a gas cooker and used a black leaded iron, which he heated on the stove to iron his clothes. There was of course no television, no dishwasher or any of the other amenities that we all can't seem to do without.

In fact, Hubert says he never missed anything and would have probably spent his entire life this way, had it not been for a faulty gas light that nearly burnt down his cottage, which is made of mud and straw.

But now that he's done it, he seems pretty pleased! He now even has an electric iron, a toaster, a food mixer, an electric stove and may even get a computer in the future - no television though.

Now that he has electricity, Hubert may even be tempted to get some running water to his cottage. Then, he will not have to trek down to his nearby well each morning, to fill his daily requirement of two buckets!
