1) a certain species of caterpillar have the smell of what they eat as well. Harlequin fish are picky eaters and only eat one kind of coral, making it easier to tell if his hunch was correct. 2) Pocillopora and Acropora. He used the crabs to see if the fish smelled like the coral. 3) when cod was added, it was oblivious to the fish that ate the natural coral. The significant thing about the study was that his hunch was right and the fish used a very clever way of survival. Brooker suspected that the fish who ate the Acropora wouldn't be recognized and would be left alone.
