There is no doubt that October 10th, 2010 or 10-10-10, is a special day, given that most of us will not be around to see this sequence, when it occurs again on October 10th, 2110. However, is it the luckiest day of the century? Depends on who you ask!

In China, the number ten represents completion, perfection and beauty. Therefore, a day with three tens is considered to be shi quan shi mei or perfect in every way. To take advantage of this once in a lifetime auspicious event, thousands of young couples throughout the country, are tying the knot today. To cope with the overwhelming demand, the country's marriage registry offices have been open since 6.am. While we are not sure about wedding luck, the hotels in China have sure had a great day, since they have been able to charge 20% more for the post-wedding parties.

However, the Chinese are not the only ones that think the day is lucky - In the Philippines, more than 200 candidates tried to lock in their 'luck' by filing for candidacy to compete in the upcoming elections.

Not wanting to be left out, an environmental activist group called 350.org decided to turn it into a lucky day for Earth, by encouraging people to try and make it the single largest day of carbon-cutting action in our planet's history.

Judging by the response, Earth definitely lucked out - Over 188 countries are taking part in this worldwide initiative. At last count, there were over 7,300 events planned, ranging from tree planting in Indonesia, to painting New York's school roofs white, to save energy and cutback emissions. Hawaiian University students have organized a beach clean-up day, while the students in Beijing are out and about, picking up trash.
