SCID stands for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency disease. They call it "bubble boy" disease because a man named David Vetter was born with X-linked SCID, he was a Texas resident who spent most of his short life inside a plastic, germ-free bubble. He passed away in 1984, at the age of 13.
